1998 Virginia Film Festival Guide

Here's How to Get Your Tickets Now by Mail

Be cool, but don't be too cool and wait until the last minute when we're sold out. Read this guide carefully and order your tickets now.

1. Plan your program.
Review the daily grids and event descriptions. Pick your films and events, making sure you don't choose conflicting events. Then fill out the ticket order form. Vinegar Hill and Regal are both downtown, and Culbreth Theater is on the UVA Grounds -- if you choose consecutive screenings across town from each other, you may have to leave one early or arrive at one late, so plan carefully.

2. Order your tickets.
By mail. We are accepting these orders now. For best ticket availability, we strongly recommend mailing your order before October 12th. Print out the ticket order form and mail it in.
By phone. Beginning October 14th, our operators will be ready to take your order (VISA & MASTERCARD only). Call toll free: 1-800-UVA-FEST (1-800-882-3378) from 10 am - 6 pm EDT Monday through Friday.
In person. Tickets will be available at two Charlottesville locations: The Festival's Main Box Office in the Culbreth Theatre, open 10 am - 6 pm Monday through Friday, beginning October 14th; and the University of Virginia (UVA) Bookstore, open every day from October 12th - 24th. For easy access to the UVA Bookstore, park at the Central Grounds Garage located on Emmet Street and get your parking validated with a $5 purchase. There is free five minute parking in the circle immediately adjacent to the Culbreth Box Office.

3. Arrange payment.
By phone. You must use VISA or MASTERCARD. Please be ready with your full name, address to which the card is billed, card number, and expiration date.
By mail. Use a credit card, money order, or personal check. If you use a check or money order, make it for the exact amount payable to: UVA -- Virginia Film Festival. There will be a $2.00 service charge for all phone and mail orders.
Please note: your order cannot be processed until payment is received.

Tickets will be mailed out beginning October 5th. All ticket orders received by Wednesday, October 21 will be mailed. If we receive your order after that date, you can pick up your tickets at the at the Festival's Main Box Office in the Culbreth Theatre.

4. Ticket Prices.
In Advance. Regular film tickets bought before the Festival begins will be $6; $5 for senior citizens 65 and older, children under twelve, and students with I.D. Tickets for special events vary in price and are noted on the order form. Please choose carefully; all sales are final. No refunds. No exchanges.
During the Festival. Beginning Thursday October 29th, regular film tickets will be $7. Senior citizen and student tickets, as well as tickets for special events will remain the same price.

Student FILM$ Dollars. All full-time UVA students receive $15 worth of FILM$ Dollars (part of the ART$ Dollars program) which may be used to purchase Virginia Film Festival tickets. Before the Festival, students may use FILM$ Dollars to obtain tickets by mail or phone from the Culbreth Box Office (the service charge does not apply), or in person at the Culbreth and the UVA Bookstore. During the Festival, FILM$ Dollars may be used to obtain tickets at the Culbreth Box Office only. Because the Vinegar Hill and Regal box offices will not be able to process FILM$ Dollars ticket sales, students wishing to use FILM$ Dollars must purchase their tickets for screenings at these theaters no later than the day before the screening.

Theatre Guidelines

  1. Seating for each screening will begin approximately thirty minutes before the screening time. Seating is general admission, so come early for best selection. Note that some seats may be reserved for special guests of the Festival. Please respect these designated areas.
  2. All unclaimed tickets (if any) set aside for Festival participants will be offered for sale to the general public 10 minutes before each screening. If a screening is sold out, come wait in line and take your chances.
  3. Admission to the theaters may be restricted after the film has begun. Please arrive early.
  4. Each theater must be completely cleared of patrons between screenings.

Park & Ride

Parking. Parking on the University of Virginia Grounds is extremely limited. Make it easy on yourself: park in downtown Charlottesville and ride the free Festival shuttle buses. Parking in the Water Street Parking Garage and the adjacent lot will be half-price when you present your Festival ticket stub.

Shuttles. Two free shuttles run continuously between the three theatres, making complete circuits every thirty minutes. Schedules will be available in the Festival News and at all Festival Theaters.

Call For Special Assistance

Individuals with disabilities have appropriate access to all three Festival Theaters: Culbreth, Vinegar Hill, and Regal.

For the deaf, the University offers a Communications Device (TDD). Call 804-982-HEAR (4327) to be connected to a computer operator via the telephone line.

Merchandise

Posters and t-shirts for the 1998 Virginia Film Festival are available by phone, mail, and at the Culbreth Theater, and will be shipped via UPS after the Festival. Please specify t-shirt size.

Updates: Festival News and Website

Updated schedules will be posted here on the Festival's website, and in the Festival News, which will hit the streets on October 20. Available at all box offices, it will contain late-breaking program information and in-depth write-ups about each film and panel discussion.
