2005 VA Film Festival Draws Record-Breaking Crowds to Jam Packed Weekend-Long Program

The 18th annual event, themed IN/JUSTICE, drew a total of 13,087 ticket holders to venues throughout Charlottesville, topping last year’s tally of 11,074 and the Film Festival’s previous record high attendance of 12,764 in 1993. Thirteen of this year’s screenings and events were sold out, including the opening night U.S. Premiere of The Fever, starring Vanessa Redgrave and “A Conversation with John Grisham.”

VIRGINIA FILM SOCIETY PRESENTS FINAL FILM IN SPRING SERIES
| April 27, 2006 The Virginia Film Society is proud to present the award-winning documentary “Shakespeare Behind Bars” as the last film in its 2006 spring series on Tuesday, May 9 at 7 p.m. at Vinegar Hill Theatre, with special guest speaker Betsy Tucker of the U.Va. drama department. This illuminating and powerful documentary follows the casting, rehearsal and presentation of Shakespeare’s play, “The Tempest,” by convicted felons inside Kentucky’s Luther Luckett Correctional Complex.

Virginia Film Society Presents the Black Maria Film and Video Festival
| March 24, 2006 The Black Maria Film and Video Festival returns to Charlottesville for its 12th annual visit to the Virginia Film Society on Wednesday, April 5 at 7 p.m. at Vinegar Hill Theatre with Festival director John Columbus. Eleven films will be featured during the festival, including three films from Virginia filmmakers.

Virginia Film Society Annouces Spring 2006 Schedule
| February 9, 2006 The Virginia Film Society kicks off its 2006 spring season with the Feb. 25 sneak preview of “Winter Passing,” produced by University of Virginia alumnus David Koplan and directed and written by Adam Rapp, acclaimed as one of the country’s most dynamic playwrights. Rapp and Koplan will be on hand for discussion after the screening.

Virginia Film Society presents I Am Cuba: The Siberian Mammoth
| November 28, 2005 The Virginia Film Society is proud to present I Am Cuba: The Siberian Mammoth, Vincente Ferraz’s documentary of the making of the remarkable 1964 Soviet-Cuban production I Am Cuba, which the L.A. Weekly calls “one of the most deliriously beautiful films ever made.” I Am Cuba: The Siberian Mammoth screens at Vinegar Hill Theatre on Tuesday, December 6, at 7:00pm. Tickets are $8, free for Film Society members.
